We’ve all seen it. One person starts talking and the room goes quiet. Another speaks, and everyone suddenly finds something irresistible to check on their phone. The divide isn’t usually down to who’s smarter or more senior - it’s simply a matter of presence.
We tend to label this “gravitas”, as if it’s some mysterious gift you’re either born with or you aren’t. But the reality is far more practical. Leadership presence isn’t a personality trait; it’s a communication skill. It’s about how clearly you think, how relevant you are to the room, and how “there” you actually are in the moment.
Get those right, and your impact changes completely.
CADENCE CURATION
Listen: How to Use Your Presence | HBR | 25 mins
This podcast listen is one of the simplest and most practical breakdowns of communication I’ve come across. Muriel Wilkins distils leadership presence into three elements: clarity, relevance, and presence.
What stands out for me is how this shows up in practice. When I work with clients preparing for high-stakes conversations, the shift from “before” to “after” is often quite noticeable. Initially, their thinking can be broad, internal, and a little unfocused. After working through these three lenses, there is a greater sense of clarity and calm confidence. And their message tends to connect more effectively, largely because it has been shaped with the other person in mind.
CADENCE TOOLKIT
The CPR Framework: Clarity, Relevance, Presence
Before an important conversation, take a few minutes to get clear on three things:
1. Clarity - What’s your point?
If you can’t express your message in a single, simple sentence, you’re not ready.
- What do I want them to think, feel, and do?
- What will be different if this goes well?
Clarity gives your message authority.
2. Relevance - Why does it matter to them?
Start from their perspective, not yours.
- What matters most to them right now?
- What’s shaping their thinking?
- How does this connect to their world?
Relevance is what makes a message land.
3. Presence - How are you showing up?
Even the right message can fall flat if the delivery isn’t there.
- What energy am I bringing?
- Am I listening, or waiting to speak?
- How do I want to be experienced?
This is often the difference people feel.
